Walden Living, a permaculture refuge

Transcend the times.

Expand your minds.

When you feel your soul taking flight

From the prison hold of the hustle.

When you discover your being

Searching for an escape—

Take a pause,

To reflect and reinvent

Away from the trappings of the daily grind.

Awaken your inner spirit,

Follow the road that leads to your roots

Just know that

There’s a place that awaits

For you to find your self.

Dig your toes into the earth

Let nature nurture you.

Inspired by the work of the great naturalist Henry Walden Thoreau and the design principles of permaculture, every inch and each corner of Walden is a testament to their continuous commitment to follow the ethos of ecological ethics. Their belief that Nature is not something to own and relish, Nature is what we are and belong to. Every aspect of the building of this repose has been given the utmost thought and effort to reduce carbon footprint. This is in tandem with our dedicated responsibility toward the natural world.

Sustainable Design and Artisanal Interiors

Every structure in the vicinity has adopted the use of local and sustainable materials to create optimum energy efficiency. This way they have been able to reduce fuel consumption that would have been required were the materials hauled from faraway places. From the mud for the walls to the sheesham trees for the furniture, everything has been taken from the farm itself. The architectural design ensures maximum access to sun light during the winter while preventing the harsh sun rays during the summers.

The east facing windows lets in the purvai or winds from the east to facilitate good ventilation. Their cottages’ mud walls act as nature’s best insulators, offering sufficient warmth in the winters and a cooling effect during the summers. There are multiple ingenious methods applied in the making of Walden to reuse construction material and reduce any debris. For example, shuttering wood has been reused as under-deck wood, waste steel has been used to make a spiral staircase and table legs, etc.

From the linen to the wall décor, everything has been tastefully handpicked and curated to showcase traditional artisans and emerging talent. Walden’s love for the handmade craftsmanship extends even to the fabric used for throws, rugs and cushions. All of these have been sourced from artisans from Punjab and other parts of India. They believe in a minimalist attitude when it comes to styling our décor as it reflects their ideas of simple living by minimizing clutter and consumption.

Walden invites seekers, explorers and wanderers who want to slow down, breathe deep and embrace peace. In this rustic refuge, they have sowed the seeds of conscious indulgence combined with simple living. Walden offers an experiential stay at their family-run nature’s haven.

Let’s connect with the community and embrace the joys of farm living. Let’s move with the rhythm of life and play with the pleasure of being.

Let your imagination fly—be a cloud watcher, a forest walker, or just be who you are when away from the chaos of city life.

In the ancient town of Ropar, in the land of the five rivers, Punjab there was a village called Naurangpur. Wide expanses of uninhabited fields led to it being called bae chirag mauza or “abandoned” in land records. Nestled in the foothills of the emerald Shivalik hills, amidst a landscape bequeathed with narrow seasonal streams and small heavenly hills—a dream sprouted up from these fields.

First came the foundation, deep and determined, forged from ideas that seek alternatives to modern consumerism. Next, appeared the walls, solid and secure, moulded from mud taken from the earth beneath our feet. Finally, rose a roof, canopied above our heads to shelter and comfort.

This is the story of our tranquil farm stay. Here, they envision a way of life that celebrates the countryside and rejoice the bounties of nature.
